Save Some Money

If you end up a skating parent you are going to need a lot of money.  I don't care if you are in the top 1% or not, you will need more money.  One way to stretch your dollar is to make your child's skating dresses.

You can do this if:
1.  you can trace a pattern and cut along the lines
2.  your literate, but if you are reading this then you are fine
3.  you are not color blind, but hey on the ice crazy color schemes work fine.

As a mom new to sewing I recommend that you start by purchasing one pattern.  I would go to www.jalie.com and order one of theirs.  Otherwise try a Kwick sew pattern.  Those are your only two choices.  Kwick sew patterns may require fewer pieces but I think Jalie is easier to put together and the directions are MUCH much simpler.

You will need at least 1.5 yards of spandex or some other stretch material.  If you can't find four way stretch just cut the fabric on the diagonal and use a two way stretch.  Its that simple.

The better your sewing machine the easier sewing is - I started with an 85.00 machine and it works fine.  I've since upgraded to a serger from babylock and the home decorator machine from babylock, but that's just because I had a few grand burning a hole in my pocket.

Yes you can order costumes from ebay - but if you do someone will likely have the same costume and you will still need to make adjustments too it.

A great skating dress can be made for less than twenty dollars in materials and blinged out with 100 swarkoski Chrystal's for ten bucks.

Last July, when my daughter decided that she would like to do a competition and she wanted to be sleeping beauty I went online to find a dress for her.  I could not find one, and worse I was quoted a price of just three hundred for a dress that I could not see.  I promptly ordered a pattern for a princess skating dress from Jalie and started to learn.  She still wears that dress.
